I am 37 years old and I am a hair dresser from Ghana. I had a child for a man outside wedlock. The man is so abusive that I considered breaking our relationship and raise our child all by myself; my family objected and started advising me about perseverance. They told me to have another child for him that I’ll have advantage in his inheritance.
Even after the second child, he refused to marry me both
traditional and legally, but continued to beat me. The major source of conflict
was his refusal to contribute to the maintenance of our children.
When I saw that things were not working out, I left him,
which got him more furious. He came over to my shop and destroyed my dryers and
other equipment which is my source of livelihood. He also instituted a divorce
suit in court which he said was to punish and ridicule me. To make matters
worse, he petitioned the court to give him custody of our children.
I was shattered and knew I could not defend myself, so I went to an NGO here in my state. They got me a lawyer to represent me in court. The organization explained to me that there was no ground for divorce as there was no form of marriage in the first case. They have asked the court to allow me keep my children, and for their father to provide support.

Knowing that I could
no longer continue with my business because of the damaged equipment, the
organization put a smile on my face and replaced all my tools.
Am now free from all sorts of abuse both physical and
emotional. My business is doing well and my kids are happy. We are able to smile
and live happily. My story makes me believe the saying that, ‘There is always
light at the end of the tunnel’. I am a Survivor!!!
